Victoria Carter
Staff Attorney
Victoria Carter is a Staff Attorney at For The People, where she supports the legal team’s work in the implementation of Prosecutor-Initiated Resentencing, collaborating with prosecutors and other stakeholders to safely release people from prison. Victoria came to this role after being exposed to different perspectives of the criminal legal system, which inspired a desire to contribute to work redefining notions of justice and public safety.
Through her various professional experiences in the public service and nonprofit realms, Victoria has put her deeply held beliefs of compassion-centered service into practice. Prior to joining For The People, she was a Deputy District Attorney in Alameda County, where she served victims and managed a voluminous caseload of mostly gendered and sexual crimes. Her work as a Deputy District Attorney was profoundly informed by her previous internships at For The People as a California ChangeLawyers Fellow and Legal Services Funders Network (LSFN) Post-Bar Legal Fellow. Before that, Victoria dedicated her time as a volunteer at various local nonprofits that provide pro-bono legal and immigration services to indigent and BIPOC communities.
Victoria holds a Juris Doctor from UC College of the Law, San Francisco, and is a proud Legal Education Opportunity Program (LEOP) alumna. She also earned dual Bachelor's degrees in French Language and Peace Studies & Conflict Resolution with a concentration in Human Rights from UC Berkeley.
In her free time, Victoria enjoys baking, cooking, reading, and thrifting. She is a San Diego native but currently resides in Oakland with her partner.
