Participatory Defense is an organizing model developed at Silicon Valley De-Bug. Led by the very families whose loved ones are facing charges in the system, Participatory Defense is a community organizing model for people facing charges, their families, and communities to impact the outcome of cases and transform the landscape of power in the court system. It is a model that has been developed in the last eleven years. Since then, De-Bug has been training other community-based organizations, or “Participatory Defense Hubs,” and the model is being implemented in cities across the country, including in jurisdictions with PIR. The Center for Employment Opportunities (CEO) provides immediate, effective, and comprehensive employment services exclusively to people recently released from incarceration. For The People partnered with CEO under its Returning Citizens Stimulus program, to provide any person released through Prosecutor-Initiated Resentencing with a $2,500 stimulus supporting their reentry. Recipients also have the opportunity to participate in CEO’s program which includes immediate work and daily pay, job coaching and placement, and retention services.
