Rachel Zarrow

Communications Specialist

Rachel Zarrow is the Communications Specialist at For The People, where she contributes to media relations, events, publications, and communications strategy.

Rachel has worked as a freelance writer, editor, communications consultant, and creative director. In her writing and editing work, she is committed to focusing on social justice issues and centering historically underrepresented voices. Rachel came to For The People after years of volunteering with incarcerated and formerly incarcerated people. For more than three years, Rachel has volunteered with Empowerment Avenue, a program that partners incarcerated writers with writers outside who help them write, revise, pitch, and publish their work. Rachel has supported incarcerated writers to publish work in The Nation, The Sacramento Bee, and The Kitchn, among others.

Rachel holds a BA in Sociology from Stanford University, where she was awarded a Rebele Journalism Internship Grant and a leadership development fellowship. Rachel also holds an MFA in Creative Writing from UC Riverside Palm Desert.

In her free time, Rachel enjoys painting, hiking, volunteering in her community, and being a proud cousin in a large, extended family. She is working on a novel, and her writing has been published in print and online in The Atlantic, The San Francisco Chronicle, and The San Francisco Standard, among other outlets. She currently resides in San Francisco with her partner and their two scruffy, small dogs.
